HUGH SIMMS NOTES:
I have always been a big fan of the militant music of Harlem in the 70s. It was full of great leaders, poets, all aimed at solving the biggest problem of their time, racism. I’m still waiting for this kind of flood of intelligent creativity to tackle our biggest problem, the recession. Go buy his early albums and if you dig spoken word pic up (THE MIND OF GIL-SCOTT-HERON) and ditch the ipod and pull out the record player. Listen to his lyrics as he prides himself on the words more than the hook. My favorite line “America not the Jeckyl the Hyde owner of a thousand disguises yet rarely surprises). He’s got new record as well where he reflects the moods he has had now after rehab. Listen to these three videos he has been a huge inspiration for me.
